Storm-Deposited Lenses

Central Southern Karavanks.

Silt/fine sand lenses (brown-stained), storm-deposited in muddy shelf or delta-front setting. The dark wisps are probably mud clasts/intraclasts or flattened plant debris/amorphous organic matter (white arrows). L = load structure. C3-P1.

In the unweathered interior the silty layers are not so distinct color-wise. The brown staining at the surface likely resulted from oxidation of iron-bearing minerals, possibly facilitated by higher permeability of silt in contrast to the mud.
