Gastropod Shell Lag
Site
Central Southern Karavanks.
Notes
The densely packed tiny gastropods in stark contrast to the mud within the argillaceous limestone reveal a quiet setting occasionally swept by storm currents. Pennsylvanian to Early Permian.
Further observations
In bedding plane view, the high-spired gastropods rest in the most hydrodynamically stable position, with their axes parallel to the current and apices pointing upstream. Seen in cross-section, these shells form a tight, nested shell lag.
